The autonomous sidebar, which focuses on films for
young viewers, will also feature a competition lineup
heavy on French films.

ROME – Planes – Disney’s latest animated feature about a crop-dusting airplane with
a fear of heights — will be the opening film in the Alice in the City competitive section
for young moviegoers at the Rome Film Festival, organizers said Wednesday.
Planes, a spinoff from Disney’s ultra-successful Cars franchise, will screen out of
competition on Nov. 8 in a gala red carpet ceremony. The section, which takes place
the same dates as the eight-year-old Rome festival, concludes Nov. 17.

The heavily French in-competition lineup includes Ulricka Bengts’ The Disciple,
Finland’s candidate for the best foreign language film Oscar; Fabio Mollo’s feature film
debut The South is Nothing (Il Sud e’ neinte), a coming of age story that earned strong
reviews in Toronto; and Nobody Owns Me, about a girl’s struggles growing up with her
unmarried father, from Swedish director Kiell-Ake Andersson.

Other competition films are Juliet from France’s Pierre Godeau; Christophe
Offenstein’s Turning Tide (En solitaire); Run, Boy, Run (Lauf Junge Lauf) from Oscarwinner
Pepe Danquart; Ivana Lalovic’s Sitting Next to Zoe; Italy’s If I Close My Eyes
I’m Not Here (Se chiudo gli occhi non sono piu qui) from Vittorio Moroni; Cazando
Luciernagas’ Chasing Fireflies; and Uvanga from Marie Helene Cousineau and
Madeline Piujuq Ivalu.

In addition to Planes, the out-of-competition slate is made up of the international
premiere Belle and Sebastien from Nicolas Vanier ad School of Babel from Julie
Bertucelli.

The Alice in The City section is again co-directed by Gianluca Giannelli and Fabia
Bettini, the sister of Goffredo Bettini, one of the Rome festival’s founders.
The Rome Film Festival will announce its full lineup next Monday.
